Fire Alarm Systems

The right system depends on the building

Fire alarm requirements vary according to the property, occupancy, escape strategy, fire risk and applicable specification. We can help establish the appropriate solution.

GRADE A

Panel-Based Fire Alarm Systems

Grade A systems use a central control and indicating panel together with automatic detection, alarm devices and manual call points.

  • Fire alarm control panels
  • Smoke and heat detectors
  • Manual call points
  • Sounders and visual alarm devices
  • Zoned or addressable configurations
  • System commissioning and handover
GRADE D

Interlinked Domestic Fire Alarms

Grade D systems use mains-powered alarms with standby power and can be suitable for certain domestic and residential applications where the relevant requirements allow.

  • Interlinked smoke alarms
  • Heat alarms where appropriate
  • Mains power with standby battery
  • Residential and rental applications
  • Appropriate detection coverage
  • Testing and maintenance support
Standards & Compliance

BS 5839 fire detection and alarm systems

The BS 5839 series provides recognised codes of practice for the design, installation, commissioning and maintenance of fire detection and alarm systems.

BS 5839-1

Applies to fire detection and alarm systems in non-domestic premises such as offices, shops, schools, care premises, hotels, warehouses and other commercial or managed buildings.

BS 5839-6

Covers fire detection and alarm systems in domestic premises. The appropriate grade and category depend on the property and its specific fire safety requirements.

Important: BS 5839 compliance does not mean that every property requires the same system. The appropriate design should be based on the building, its use, fire risk assessment, escape arrangements and any applicable licensing or project requirements.

Fire Alarm Categories

Life protection and property protection

Fire alarm categories describe the extent and purpose of detection. The correct category should be established from the property’s fire safety requirements.

L1 Automatic detection throughout the building for the highest level of life protection.
L2 Detection on escape routes plus specified higher-risk areas.
L3 Detection on escape routes and rooms opening directly onto those routes.
L4 Automatic detection primarily covering escape routes and circulation areas.
L5 A custom life-safety system addressing a specific identified risk.
P1 Automatic detection throughout the building with property protection as the principal objective.
P2 Automatic detection in defined areas where property protection is required.
M Manual fire alarm system relying on manual initiation of the alarm.

After Installation

Installation is only the beginning

A fire alarm system needs to remain reliable after it has been installed. Regular testing, inspection and maintenance help identify faults and keep the system ready to provide warning when it is needed.

  • Routine system inspections
  • Testing of detection and alarm devices
  • Investigation of system faults
  • Detector and component replacement
  • Existing system upgrades
  • Maintenance support for commercial properties

Already have a fire alarm?

You don’t necessarily need a completely new system. We can inspect an existing installation and advise whether it can be maintained, repaired, upgraded or replaced.

Frequently Asked Questions

Fire alarm installation FAQs

Some of the most common questions about fire alarm systems, installation and maintenance.

What type of fire alarm system do I need?
The correct system depends on the building type, occupancy, layout, fire risk, escape arrangements and applicable requirements. We can review these factors and advise on a suitable approach.
What is BS 5839?
BS 5839 is a series of British Standards covering fire detection and alarm systems. Different parts apply to different premises, including BS 5839-1 for non-domestic premises and BS 5839-6 for domestic premises.
What is the difference between Grade A and Grade D?
Grade A systems are panel-based fire alarm systems with automatic detection, alarm devices and manual call points. Grade D systems are mains-powered domestic alarm systems with standby power. The appropriate grade depends on the premises and applicable requirements.
Can you upgrade my existing fire alarm?
In many cases, yes. Depending on the age, condition and compatibility of the existing equipment, an installation may be upgraded by replacing control equipment, adding detection, improving coverage or replacing selected components.
Do you provide fire alarm maintenance?
Yes. Hinter Electrics can provide ongoing testing, inspection, maintenance and fault support to help keep your fire alarm system operational.
How much does a fire alarm installation cost?
There is no sensible single price because cost depends on the building size, system category, number of devices, cabling requirements, access and the existing installation. Contact us with your property details for a tailored quote.
Do I need a Fire Risk Assessment?
Fire safety requirements vary by premises. For many non-domestic properties, the responsible person has duties relating to fire safety and fire risk assessment. If you already have an assessment or fire strategy, provide it with your enquiry so the alarm requirements can be reviewed.
